Tana Gardner is Managing Director of Corporate Accounting & Reporting at USAA Real Estate Company in San Antonio, TX since where she oversees their team of technical and tax experts. USAA Real Estate Company recently bought a majority share of its business from USAA and is transitioning to an independent investment advisor focused on serving its institutional, sovereign, private equity and high-net worth investors with innovative real estate investments across the capital and property type spectrum. Tana’s global experience and disciplined financial approach support the company’s seemingly never-ending barrage of deals, partnerships, funds and other investment vehicles to be evaluated, structured and reported on. (It is not lost on Tana that this is a fantastic problem to have!) Prior to joining USAA RealCo, Tana lead the development, preconstruction and finance teams at vertically-integrated multifamily developer, Lifestyle Communities, in Columbus, OH. There she oversaw the functions of deal structuring & underwriting, sourcing and supply chain, architectural services, risk management and financial reporting, planning & analysis and started the company’s first women’s network in 2017. Tana began her career, against her initial better judgment, as an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Her initial judgment was obviously wrong (as is often the case) as she spent 14 years with PwC in assurance services in Boston, New York and Cleveland, focused on public and private real estate and infrastructure investment companies, REITs and private equity funds as well as financial reporting, process improvement and internal controls. It was at PwC that she gained her love of international travel, great coffee, even better wine and the power of diversity, process optimization and teamwork. She’s also a follower of and firm believer in the value of servant leadership and finance as a strategic business partner linking a company’s strategic objectives to key performance indicators and the right mix of financial and operational metrics.
